Do you want to create a backyard oasis on a small budget? Here are some tips to help you create a relaxing backyard oasis for you and your family to enjoy.
Quick back story: Before I started writing this, I was looking over the last post I wrote about my plans for our backyard space. It’s so funny how we can make some plans and God will laugh—lol! But I would have to say, I am still grateful for the fact that we even have a space to call our own!
We don’t have a big budget to work with in the first place but when you really think about it, my family is growing so I need the space to grow with us too. Here are a few things that we were able to do—and if you are working on your own backyard oasis, give a few of these tips a try for yourself.
Where to Start
Even with a small space, the possibilities are endless. You just need to pick a section from your yard and start there. This way, you get the most important features done first and the rest can trickle in later.
For us, getting the fence and landscape done was the key. We hired a contractor to add aluminum fencing on the side and some aluminum bars along the back. I asked them to keep it low so that we could see the kids play.
If you are also looking for where to start here are a few spots, regardless of the size of the space:
Add fencing
Build a deck or lay out a patio
Plant a tree
Add a water feature
Lighting
Once the fencing was done, the next step for us was to replace the landscape. Because it is a small space, we didn’t want to spend money on buying a small lawnmower. So we decided that we should either brick the rest of the space or find a cheaper option since we were using a part of the space for the garden.
We decided to hire someone to layout concert tiles and solidify the rest of the space. Best decision for us because when it rains it gets so muddy!
How Will You Entertain?
So now that you have your perimeter laid out, it’s time to think about how you entertain your guests. Seating area? Grill or pizza oven?
If you are working on a budget like us, you will work with what you have until you can get what you want. We had a rusted high-top table and a thrifted patio set. It’s been a year since we settled in this home and we just recently bought a grill, so we are a testament to getting what you need as time goes on. Since the patio set was thrifted, we replaced the cushion to better fit our style.
My favorite feature of the space is the garden! If you look back on my past post, you will see that the layout is pretty similar but flipped in a sense. We decided to place the garden by the grill. I am so pleased with the space and can’t for everything to bloom!
We not only wanted to plant things that are beautiful but crops that are nutritious and will sustain us as well.
So far this is what we have:
A dwarf mango tree
Mint Bush
Vervain Bush- anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and a good a pain reliever
Rosemary
Lemongrass
Sweet Potatoes
Tomatoes
Sweet Peas
Carrots
If you are also looking for a backyard Oasis to relax and enjoy in, especially on a budget, take your time and work on the most important areas first and the rest will fall into place.
